Last week Australia's Brett Rumford won his second title in as many weeks at the China Open. As this highly skilled player continues his success on the European Tour, this week's player profile highlights some of his recent golfing milestones.
Born in 1977 in Perth, Australia, Rumford picked up his first club at the age of ten. The young Rumford was a golfing natural, with excellent co-ordination and a high level of maturity for his age. The Australian was gifted with a strong work ethic from his childhood days, and his game soon began to flourish.
After representing Australia at several amateur events, Rumford was accepted into the prestigious AIS golf program. The high point of his amateur career came in 1999 when he won the ANZ Player's Championship on the PGA Tour of Australasia. Rumford took the decision to turn professional the following season.
Fourteen years since his professional debut, Rumford has enjoyed a varied and successful career on the European Tour, having weathered a brief stint on the US PGA Tour in 2008. Rumford has lifted the trophy seven times during his professional career – five times on the European Tour, once on the Asia Tour, and once on the OneAsia Tour.
Rumford's first European Tour victory came in 2003 at the St Omer Open, where he beat Britain's Ben Mason by an impressive five strokes to lift the trophy. He won the Irish Open in the next season, followed by a victory at the European Masters in 2007, a tournament he won in a playoff against the Briton Phillip Archer.
After a winning drought of six years, Rumford soared to the top of the European Tour's money list last week after winning two successive events, the Ballantine's Championship and last week's China Open. As Rumford returns to winning ways, he has reminded fans and competitors alike that hard work and dedication always pay off.
