Course Review: Chambers Bay Golf Course – University Place, Washington State

As the 2014 PGA Tour season winds down, all eyes are on the new courses that have been chosen to host Tour events in 2015.

Next season's U.S. Open will be hosted by Chambers Bay Golf Course, a pristine public course in the Pacific Northwest. This week's player profile takes a look at the history and layout of this world-class golf course as it prepares to host top players from the international golf circuit next year.

A True Links Course – 4000 Miles From Scotland

Golf fans may be surprised to learn that a public course is hosting the US Open – but Chambers Bay is no ordinary municipal golf facility with dead straight fairways and flat greens. The course features an authentic Scottish links layout that stirs up images of St Andrews and other famous golf locations in the British Isles, set against the scenic backdrop of Puget Sound.

Chambers Bay prides itself on the authenticity of its links layout, which is built around several large bodies of water. The course features the usual undulating fairways and slippery greens which are found on a traditional links course, with the greens keepers maintaining pristine playing conditions that would rival – or better – many courses in the United Kingdom.

Making A Public Course Championship-Ready

Chambers Bay recently hosted a US Open preview event where journalists and professional golfers got a taste of the improvements the course has already made in preparation for hosting a major next year. Several holes will switch between par 4 and 5 over the course of the tournament, with the fifteenth hole gaining and losing several hundred yards in length.

Playing The Course

Golfers who find themselves in Washington State may sample this top-tier public course by booking on Chambers Bay. Please note that as an authentic walking-only links course; Chambers Bay does not permit the use of golf carts.
