Course Review: Coxmoor Golf Club – Sutton-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England

On Sunday the Englishman Oliver Wilson won his first European Tour event at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship – but before the champion was gracing the best-known courses in Europe he was a regular player at Coxmoor Golf Club.

This week's course review takes a look at the golf offering at Coxmoor, the official home course of both Greg Owen and Oliver Wilson – two champions who hit their first drives and made their first putts on this stately parkland course.

100 years of excellent family golf

Coxmoor celebrated its hundredth birthday last year, and after a century of golf the layout at this heathland course is still as playable and pristine as ever. Established in 1913, the course has hosted several popular local tournaments over the years, and provides a friendly, open atmosphere for locals and guests to enjoy a round of golf in the scenic surrounds of Nottinghamshire.

The course at Coxmoor features wide, generous fairways – with the occasional dogleg to challenge the accuracy of tee shots – and large greens which are deceptively easy-looking from afar. The mature trees and shrubs that make up the rough are far from easy to escape, while a developed short game is essential to chip out of greenside bunkers and avoid high scores on the greens.

The course contains five par 5 holes, which provide opportunities to make par – or perhaps even birdie – for the lower-scoring golfer. Leisure golfers will appreciate the length of par-3s and -4s on the course, which allow a three-wood or hybrid iron to be used off the tee. Overall, the course rewards accuracy over distance, making it a perfect venue for the whole family.

Playing the course

Coxmoor is open to visitors on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and advance bookings are essential. For more information, please visit the club's website.
