Player Profile: Fred Couples

On Sunday the American veteran Fred Couples was victorious at the Charles Schwab Cup, the final event of the 2013 Champions Tour. This week's player profile takes a look at the distinguished career of this iconic golfer.

54-year-old Couples was raised in Seattle, Washington and currently resides in California. The PGA Tour veteran and former world number one has enjoyed a career that will enter its fourth decade next year, with a total of 56 victories to his name.

Couples PGA Tour career took off in the 1980's, with his debut victory at the 1983 Kemper Open marking the beginning of a long and victorious run. The American enjoyed further success in the early 1990's when he was named player of the year in both the 1991 and 1992 seasons. It was at this time that Couples became the first American to reach the number one position in the World Golf Ranking, since the system was introduced in the late 1980's.

In 1992, Couples won the US Masters and took his place among the world's most celebrated golfers. With victories at some of the most iconic tournaments on the PGA Tour, including the Byron Nelson and St Jude Classics, the Buick Open, and the Players Championship, couples continued his winning ways throughout the next two decades to record a total of 15 PGA Tour titles.

Couples made his debut on the Champions Tour in 2010, winning nine events over the past three years. A former US Ryder Cup Team Captain and active golf course co-designer, Couples has overseen the creation of over 20 championship courses worldwide in partnership with Gene D. Bates.

Known as one of the friendliest and most laid-back players on the Tour, Couples has never made heavy weather out of the very demanding business of professional golf. His successful career continues on the Champions Tour, where he continues to challenge himself with excellent results.
