In the United States an elated Tiger Woods made history on Sunday when he won the 74th PGA event of his career at the AT&T National at the Congressional Country Club.
Woods quickly made up a one-stroke shortfall from the third round to overtake Zimbabwe's Brendan de Jonge, who carded a 77 in the final round against Woods' 69. With a two stroke lead going into the final moments of the tournament, Woods made an easy putt for victory at the eighteenth hole to win his third championship in just seven starts on the PGA Tour this season.
Woods, who reigned supreme as world number one before a crisis in his personal life and nagging injuries put a temporary stop to his golfing career, is now ranked number four in the world, with his eye firmly fixed on reclaiming his status as the planet's best golfer. Having weathered many storms on the personal and professional fronts, Woods now surpasses golfing legend Jack Nicklaus as the player who has won the most events on the US PGA Tour.
In Europe, the Irish Open was won by Jamie Donaldson of Wales. Capitalising on a one-stroke overnight lead, Donaldson swiftly extended his command of the final round by carding three birdies in a row from the third hole at Royal Portrush.
Donaldson continued his impressive performance, carding another three birdies in just four holes after dropping a shot at the eleventh hole. Another dropped shot at the sixteenth was followed by two more birdies at the final holes of the tournament, as the crowd cheered Donaldson on to victory,
Sunday's victory was the first in Donaldson's professional career, which has seen him waiting on a victory on the European Tour since turning professional in the year 2000. Golf fans should keep an eye on this golfer as he continues his successful career in Europe.
