On the US PGA Tour, former world number one Tiger Woods charged to victory at the Memorial tournament on Sunday, beating compatriot Spencer Levin and South Africa’s Rory Sabbatini by a margin of two strokes.
As play unfolded in the final round Levin proved unable to maintain his overnight lead, opening a gap that was snapped up by Woods in his trademark high-octane style. After making up a four-stroke deficit on the front nine, Woods mounted a formidable attack on the back nine, including a chip-in for birdie at the 16th green which wowed fans and impressed the tournament’s host, golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.
Returning to his form after a period of personal and professional difficulties, Woods proved once again that he is a force to be reckoned with at the highest level of professional golf. With 73 PGA Tour titles to his name, the former world number one has reason to celebrate Sunday’s impressive victory.
In Europe, the Wales Open was won by Thailand’s Thogchai Jaidee, who beat Holland’s Jooist Luiten and Thomas Bjorn of Denmark by a single stroke to clinch the title.
In the final round which took place in wet weather which made play extremely tricky on the course at Celtic Manor, Jaidee kept his nerve to lift the trophy after 18 holes. The champion started Sunday’s round with an overnight lead, but a bogey and double-bogey on the front nine threatened to derail his victory.
Taking this challenge in his stride, Jaidee turned his game around on the back nine where he carded four birdies in an impressive charge to victory. Narrowly escaping a playoff against Luiten and Bjorn, a one-stroke victory was all he needed to lift the trophy for the fifth time on the European Tour. Golf fans can expect many more exciting performances from this talented player.
