On the US PGA Tour, Phil Mickelson displayed the kind of golf that made him a household name by winning the Phoenix Open on Sunday.
As Sunday's final round drew to a close in Phoenix, Arizona, Mickelson brushed off a late challenge from compatriot Brandt Snedeker to win the tournament by four strokes. Having dominated the tournament since round one, Mickelson employed his consistent golf game throughout the weekend to stay ahead of the pack and though Snedeker appeared to be mounting a charge during the last round, Mickelson's three birdies over the last six holes secured him a comfortable victory.
After lifting the trophy, an elated Mickelson told journalists that he had been nervous at the start of the final round, but was happy to be back in the winner's circle. Snedeker's challenge earlier in the day secured him second place on the leader board, while fellow-American Scott Piercy took third place.
The European Tour travelled to the United Arab Emirates last week, where Scotland's Stephen Gallacher was victorious at the Dubai Desert Classic.
Having started the final round with a three-shot lead, Gallacher shot 71 on Sunday to win the tournament with a final score of 266, or 22-under-par. South Africa's Richard Sterne, who was in the lead after the second round before Gallacher turned the tables on Saturday, matched the Scotsman's final round score to take second place. Third place at the tournament was shared by Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark and the Chilean Felipe Aguilar.
In women's golf, Australia's Karrie Webb won the Volvik Ladies Masters for an impressive eighth time on Sunday, beating South Korea's Chella Choi, fellow Australian Su-Hyun Oh, and Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand – the three players shared second place.
For Webb, who began the final round two strokes off the pace, Sunday's victory is historic – the Australian now equals Sam Snead's famous record for winning the same event eight times, a rare achievement in the realm of professional golf.
