On the US PGA Tour, a resurgent Dustin Johnson beat Rory McIlroy to win the St Jude Classic on Sunday.

Having returned to the PGA Tour after an 11 week leave of absence after weathering a muscular injury, Johnson quickly re-established his reputation as a solid winner when he lifted the trophy in Memphis, Tennessee, carding his first victory in just two tournaments.

Despite the American's signature long-hitting drives, Johnson's victory in the final round was by no means guaranteed: top-tier golfer Rory McIlroy put up an impressive challenge for the title on Sunday, persisting until the final hole where a runaway tee shot put the Northern Irishman out of contention for the tournament. With birdies on two of the last three holes on Sunday, Johnson lifted the trophy at his sixth PGA victory, becoming the only other player after Tiger Woods to win in each of his five years on the Tour since finishing college.

In Europe, Britain's Lee Westwood won for the third time at the Nordea Masters in a five-stroke victory over Ross Fisher.

Westwood was a strong contender from the first round where he carded a four-under-par 68, following this up on day two with an impressive 64 to take a three stroke lead. During Saturday's final round the Englishman maintained his usual ease of play to finish five strokes clear of Fisher, his nearest rival. The best round of the day went to Spain's Sergio Garcia, who carded a 67 to take a share of third place.

Westwood, who is ranked third in the world, had not enjoyed a victory for over a year since winning the 2011 Ballantine's Championship. This third victory at the Nordea Masters saw this seasoned player returning to top form with the US Open around the corner. Golf fans should watch Westwood attentively as he continues his pursuit of the world number one title.
