On the US PGA Tour, world number one Tiger Woods further secured his return to the top of international golf when he won the Players Championship by two strokes on Sunday.
As the weather-delayed tournament came to a close on Sunday, a three-way rivalry was unfolding at the Stadium Course at Ponte Vedra Beach. Woods and Spain’s Sergio Garcia were joined by a late challenger, Sweden’s David Lingmerth, in their race for the trophy as an excited crowd voiced their support for the American world number one.
Although Lingmerth looked poised to challenge Woods for the title, his challenge was short-lived, leaving the world number one tied with long-time rival Garcia after seventeen holes. After Garcia met with a disastrous seventeenth hole, Woods capitalised on his rival’s difficulties by making par at the final hole to lift the trophy.
This is the world number one’s second career win at the Players Championship, having won it previously in the 2001 season. Sunday’s win will reinforce the champion’s position at the top of world golf and serves as a stark reminder of the focus and competitive spirit that Woods can display on any course.
The European Tour was in recess last week, with players travelling to the United States for the Players Championship. The Tour will recommence this weekend with the Madeira Islands Open.
In Women’s Golf, South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace won her first title in almost three years when she was victorious at the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open in Antayla on Sunday.
As pressure mounted during the final round, Pace carded a one-under-par 72 to win by a single stroke against three competitors – Finland’s Minea Blomqvist, Charley Hull of the United Kingdom, and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda.
Having successfully avoided a playoff, Pace celebrated her first victory in three seasons – a further career milestone for the talented South African.
