As the final round unfolded on Sunday amid temperate weather at the Ocean Course, McIlroy reminded golf fans of his incredible talent as he carded an eight-stroke victory over Britain's David Lynn to win the second major tournament of his career.
McIlroy dominated the final round with his combination of energy and precision, carding a six-under-par 66 to seal his victory in grand style. With Lynn in second place eight strokes behind the Northern Irishman, Carl Pettersson of Sweden came in third after an infraction of the rules cost him a penalty during the final round.
McIlroy is now ranked number one in the world once again, having lifted the trophy at a major championship for the second time in as many seasons. Critics had lashed the young player for his lacklustre performance after his finishes at the Masters and British Open failed to impress, prompting McIroy to stage a comeback which has seen his reputation recover in full. With newfound confidence, this talented golfer has regained his position at the top of world golf.
On the LPGA, the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic was won by South Korea's Ryu So-yeon, seven shots ahead of the USA's Angela Stanford.
Carding a total of six birdies during Sunday's final round, Ryu soon broke away from a pack of talented South Korean golfers who were tied for the lead at the beginning of the round. As the back nine beckoned, the talented Ryu extended her lead to seven strokes to lift the trophy after eighteen holes. Golf fans can expect many more great performances from the 2011 Women's US Open champion.
