The US PGA Tour continued its co-sanctioned China leg last week, with America's Dustin Johnson winning the WGC Champions in Shanghai.
Johnson finished the tournament in style, with three birdies and an eagle on the back nine securing a three-shot victory over the Britons Ian Poulter and Graeme McDowell, who took second and third place respectively.
The American started Sunday's round with a three-stroke advantage, but a dropped shot at the first hole created an opportunity for Poulter and McDowell to challenge the champion for the lead over the front nine. The three players traded places at the top of the leader board in an impressive display of golfing bravado - until the fourteenth hole.
Johnson seized the lead with a series of birdies and an eagle at the sixteenth, with Poulter and McDowell losing steam toward the end of the tournament. By the time the American sank his final putt of the day, he was three strokes ahead. Having weathered the competition during one of the most exciting final rounds in recent memory, Johnson lifted the trophy for the eighth time at a PGA Tour event.
The European Tour was in recess last week as players prepare for the Turkish Open, which begins on November 7th. As the second-last event on the European calendar this season, the tournament promises to be a deciding moment for this year's Order of Merit winner.
Sweden's Henrik Stenson still leads the Order of Merit rankings, but after Graeme McDowell's excellent performance at the WGC Champions in China the Briton may be in a position to challenge Stenson for Europe's top spot.
Fellow-Britons Justin Rose and Ian Poulter are also hot on Stenson's trail, and will be joining him at the Turkish Open. McDowell is not participating in next week's event, but will be present at the tournament-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai a week later.
