On the US PGA Tour, the American Harris English won his second professional title when he edged out Sweden's Robert Karlsson in a late charge to win the OHL Classic at Makayoba.
Karlsson, who lead the tournament overnight, maintained his lead over the front nine on Sunday. The pressure was immense, with players having to make up lost holes from the previous day after rainy weather put a stop to play on Saturday.
However, a spell of disastrous shots on the home stretch took the Swede out of contention. The jungle terrain at El Camaleon proved challenging for Karlsson and after the tropical rough swallowed several of his tee shots, a window of opportunity opened for English to take the lead.
The American kept his cool over the back nine, finishing with a six-under-par 65 to clinch the title. Fellow-American Brian Stuard came second, while compatriots Jason Bohn and Steve Stroud as well as South Africa's Rory Sabbatini shared third place.
The European Tour marked the end of its 2013 season on Sunday, with Henrik Stenson winning the DP World Tour Championship and the prestigious Race to Dubai.
Stenson was a popular favourite to top the European Tour's money list this year, and his performance on Sunday reminded fans of the champion's superior ability on the golf course. He finished the tournament with an eagle at the final hole which electrified the crowd in Dubai. This impressive final shot topped off the Swede's six-stroke victory over Ian Poulter of Britain.
For Stenson, who was recently crowned the FedEx Cup Champion in the United States, winning the European Tour's Race to Dubai is a strong confirmation of his place at the very top of professional golf.
The Swede is currently ranked number three in the world, and judging by his recent performance on the course, he may provide a very real challenge to Adam Scott and Tiger Woods in the 2014 season.
