The US PGA Tour's 2013/14 season began last week, with the Frys.com Open being won by the American Jimmy Walker.
Walker began the final round three strokes behind overnight leader Brooks Koepka, but consistent play on the front nine allowed the American to mount a successful charge for the trophy over the last six holes. With four holes left to play, Walker birdied the fifteenth hole on Sunday, making three pars in a row to finish at 66, or five-under-par, for the day.
Koepka enjoyed a four-stroke lead on the front nine, but the overnight leader headed rapidly into bogey territory from hole eight, with a total of four bogeys on Sunday. The overnight leader finished in third place, with Vijay Singh taking second place behind Walker.
For Walker, who won his first-ever PGA Tour victory off 188 starts on Sunday, there was ample cause to celebrate. This disciplined player may become a regular winner on the Tour as his game continues to flourish.
In Europe, the Englishman David Lynn seized victory at the Portugal Masters on Sunday, beating Justin Walters of South Africa by one shot.
Lynn was six shots off the pace at the beginning of Sunday's final round, but after nine birdies and just a single bogey the Briton found himself at the top of the leader board. The strong field of fellow-players seemed not to faze Lynn as he weathered the competition with apparent ease.
Although Walters trailed by just a single shot behind Lynn for most of the final round, the South African wasn't able to close the gap. With the champion carding birdies on half the holes he played on Sunday, Walters' opportunities were limited – nevertheless, the South African kept Lynn in his sights throughout the final round and finished one stroke behind in second place.
