On the European Tour, Thomas Bjorn of Denmark prevailed in a playoff against Scotland’s Craig Lee to win the European Masters on Sunday.

As players overcame bad weather and kept up the pressure during the final round, Bjorn made up a two-stroke deficit on Sunday. The Dane signed off on a final round of 65, sharing the lead with Lee after eighteen holes and sparking a playoff for the title.

As both players headed for the first extra hole at 20-under-par, 42-year-old Bjorn pulled off an impressive feat at the eighteenth green. Playing in misty and rainy weather, he sank a 12 foot putt to put Lee out of contention. Victor Du Buisson of France finished in third place behind Lee, while Spain’s Alejandro Canizares was a shot behind in fourth place.

Commenting on his second European Masters title in just three seasons, Bjorn told journalists that several near-misses during tournaments earlier this year had given him the desire to win. As he celebrates his 14th win on the European Tour, Bjorn is still a force to be reckoned with in world golf.

The US PGA Tour was in recess last week as players prepare for the BMW Championship. The tournament forms part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, and will take place on September 12th at the Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois.

In Women’s golf, Rebecca Artis of Australia won the Helsingborg Open on Sunday. The 24-year-old erased a five-stroke deficit to seize victory on Sunday, beating local favourite Caroline Hedwall by a single stroke to clinch the title. Valentine Derrey of France came in third.

Sunday’s victory marks Artis’ first win on the Ladies European Tour. With several decades of her playing career ahead of her, this talented young golfer is sure to become a regular contender as her game continues to flourish.
