On the European Tour, the Englishman David Howell won his first title in seven years on Sunday when he won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

As the final round came to a close at St Andrews, Howell was tied for the lead with Peter Uihlein of the United States. The Englishman delivered the goods during the final round, with a five-under-par 67 that erased Uihlein's two-shot overnight lead. Neither player was able to break the deadlock after eighteen holes, forcing a sudden-death playoff.

After a tie at the first extra hole which raised the crowd's excitement and increased the pressure on both players, Howell clinched the title with a birdie at the second playoff hole. As Uihlein took second place just a day after dominating the field in round three, Howell was visibly moved as he lifted his first trophy in seven years at St Andrews, the home of golf.

Tom Lewis and Shane Lowry, who both showed signs of competing for the title before Howell's impressive performance took them out of contention, tied for third place behind Uihlein.

The US PGA Tour marked the end of its 2013 season last week with the annual Player of the Year Award ceremony, which was won by world number one Tiger Woods. As he set a record by receiving the award for the 11th time in his career, Woods had the opportunity to look back on a solid comeback season. The tour's top-ranked player weathered several injuries this year to win five tournaments on the Tour.

As Woods celebrated his comeback,  the Rookie of the Year Award was presented to compatriot Jordan Spieth. This talented player made his debut on the PGA Tour this season, becoming the youngest player to win an event since 1931 when he clinched the John Deere Classic earlier this year.
