In the United States, Kevin Streelman celebrated his first PGA Tour victory on Sunday when he edged out fellow-American Boo Weekley in mild spring weather to win the Tampa Bay Championship in Florida.
Streelman began Sunday's final round in a three-way tie for the lead after an exceptional third round lifted him to the top of the leader board alongside George Coetzee and Justin Leonard. With two birdies in the opening three holes, Streelman was in great form from the beginning. The American didn't drop a single shot on Sunday, picking up an additional two birdies to lift the trophy for the first time on the PGA Tour.
Weekley, who finished two strokes behind Streelman to take second place, carded an impressive eight birdies in the final round – scoring the best round of the day at 63. The American led a valiant charge, but in the end Streelman's consistent performance throughout the tournament assured his victory. Having won his first tournament off 153 starts on the Tour, Streelman has joined the winners circle at last.
The European Tour was in India last week, where the South African Thomas Aiken won the Avantha Masters by three strokes on Sunday.
Aiken began the final round in the lead, and maintained his position at the top of the leader board over 18 holes on Sunday. The South African had to contend with a competitive field, including local favourite Gaganjeet Bhullar who carded three birdies on the closing stretch in an attempt to seize victory during the last moments of the tournament.
Despite a pressurised final round, Aiken maintained his usual composure and never lost control of the lead on Sunday, becoming the sixth South African to win a European Tour event this season. This is Aiken's second win on the European Tour, having won the Open de Espana in 2011.
