Golf Results - 31 October 2012

The US PGA Tour travelled to Asia last week for the CIMB Classic which was held in Malaysia. After four rounds of exciting golf, victory finally went to the American Nick Watney who carded a final round score of 61, or 10-under-par, to beat fellow-American and runner-up Bo Van Pelt.

Watney had begun the final round four strokes behind overnight winner Van Pelt, but after a bumper final round their roles were reversed. Watney made easy work of the course as he carded an amazing 11 birdies to clinch the title.

Former world number one Tiger Woods had been poised to make a charge for the title on Sunday, but when the former champion's game faltered on the back nine, Watney found the opening he needed to consolidate his lead. Narrowly missing a birdie on the final hole which would have taken his score to golf's magic number 59, Watney was visibly elated as he lifted the trophy. Van Pelt came in second, a single shot off the pace, tied with Robert Garrigus.

In China, the European Tour's co-sanctioned BMW Open was won by Sweden's Peter Hanson in a one-stroke victory over Rory McIlroy.

As the final round came to its close on Sunday, experience trumped youth on the course at Lake Malaren as Hansen weathered a late charge by McIlroy to clinch the title. The world number one had taken an easy approach to the final round until the 15th hole where an eagle placed him in contention.

When the Irishman birdied the 16th hole, fans began to wonder whether Hanson's lead was in danger. However, the Swede kept his nerve to lift the trophy, despite dropping his only shot of the round at the final hole. With $ 7 million in prize money, Sunday's victory will be a sweet one for Hanson, hard-won as it was.
