Another year of great golfing lies ahead, this week we have a look at some of the major events taking place in the first half of 2015.
The 104th South African Open Championship tees off at Glendower Golf Club in Johannesburg from 8 to 11 January 2015. The SA Open is part of the Sunshine Tour and is sanctioned by the European Tour, with a €1,000,000 purse for the winner.
Earning a green jacket in the US Masters Tournament is still considered the most prestigious title on the PGA Tour, despite having the second highest prize money of $9,000,000. Filled with tradition, the Masters is always hosted by Augusta National Golf Club in the state of Georgia, USA, and always takes place on the weekend ending on the second Sunday in April.This year, the tournament takes place from 9 to 12 April 2015.
Currently the richest competition on the golfing calendar, with a prize of $10,000,000, The Players Championship is on 07 to 10 May 2015 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. This venue is owned by the PGA Tour and is now the permanent home of the Players Championship, having been designed with both players and spectators in mind. Traditionally, this contest has the strongest field of the year and is highly anticipated in golfing circles.
It’s time for the US Open from 15 to 21 June 2015 at University Place, Washington, where $9,000,000 will be up for grabs when 156 top professional golfers take to the field for the first half of this 72-hole competition. From halfway, the top 60 players will continue to fight for the crown.
The biggest event of the European Tour, the Open Championship, or the British Open as it is also called, starts on 12 July 2015 on the Old Course at St Andrews Links in Scotland. The winning shot will be played on 19 July and it is expected that the purse will be €1,000,000 for 2015.
