On Sunday the Swede Henrik Stenson won a $10 million bonus when he prevailed at the season finale Tour Championship. This week's player profile takes a look at the successful career of Sweden's top-ranked international golfer.
37-year-old Stenson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. The young Stenson took a keen interest in golf at high school and turned professional at the age of 23 in 1999. Weathering the pressure of European golf with relative ease, the Swede was top of the Challenge Tour's money list in the 2000 season.
Stenson joined the European Tour in 2001 and has won seven events at the top level of European golf. His first victory came in his rookie year, at the Benson and Hedges International Open. Since then, Stenson has lifted the trophy at the BMW International Open, the Qatar Masters, the Dubai Desert Classic, and WGC Matchplay Championship, amongst others.
With his European golf career on a solid footing, Stenson made his debut across the Atlantic in 2007, joining the US PGA Tour. Splitting his time between Europe and North America over the past six years, he has racked up four victories on the PGA Tour, including the 2009 Players Championship, and the Deutsche Bank and Tour Championships this season.
The 2013 season has seen Stenson appear regularly in North America, vying for the top place in the FedEx Cup Playoffs with world number one Tiger Woods. The Swede's victory at the Tour Championship on Sunday is a major milestone in his PGA Tour career, making Stenson a strong favourite for further victories in the 2014 season and beyond.
As the 2013 FedEx Cup champion, Stenson is the highest-ranked international golfer of Swedish origin. From his American home base in Orlando, Florida, Stenson has made a mark on the PGA Tour and is likely to do so for many seasons to come.
