Player Profile - Alvaro Quiros

This week we showcase the young golfing sensation from Spain, Alvaro Quiros Garcia. Born in the town of Guardiaro, he showed promise in golf from a young age, turning professional at the age of twenty-one. Alvaro Quiros, as he is professionally known, made his debut on the challenge tour in 2004. After two tentative years in which his technique had time to establish itself, his first big win came at the 2006 Morson International Pro-Am Challenge where he beat Mark Pilkington by an impressive four strokes for his first career victory.

In 2006 Quiros made his debut on the European Tour, after finishing in the top 35 players at qualifying school the previous year. Teeing up with some of Europe’s finest players, he had his first top-tier victory in December 2006 at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa, a co-sanctioned event, beating local favourite Charl Schwartzel.

With his first victory under his belt, Quiros quickly upped his game in response to the high level of playing demanded by the European Tour. Weathering the competition would prove a good challenge to Quiros, who was again victorious in 2008 at the Portugal Masters. The following year Quiros won the Commercialbank Qatar Masters, beating Louis Oosthuizen and Henrik Stenson by three strokes. In 2010 Qurios won at home in the Open de Spagna, beating Briton James Morrison in a playoff.

At the weekend, Alvaro Quiros won his first big tournament outside of Europe when he was victorious at the Dubai Desert Classic. In a tournament that showcased the Spaniard’s flare for impressive shots and his ability to recover from setbacks on the course, Qurios wowed fans with a display of golfing prowess. Alvaro Quiros is a young, up and coming player on the European Tour. Golf fans should keep an eye on the fiery Spaniard as he goes from strength to strength.
