Last Sunday’s Northern Trust Open was won by the American Bill Haas. This week we highlight the recent milestones in this talented golfer’s professional career.
Born in 1982 in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, William Harlan Haas grew up in the nearby state of South Carolina in a family of golfers. Following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, Haas enrolled at Wake Forest University where his golf career began in earnest.
By the time Haas turned professional in 2004 he had racked up a number of prestigious collegiate golf accolades including a number of ACC awards, the Haskins Award, and the Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus Awards. After competing successfully on the Walker Cup and Palmer Cup teams, Haas was ready to play golf at the highest professional level.
The first few years of Haas’s professional career were a period of hard work and consolidation, as the young golfer was forced to compete with some of the world’s finest players. After competing on the Challenge Tour in 2005, Haas progressed to the US PGA Tour as his game continued to improve.
Despite the pressure and high standard of golfing skill required to play on the Tour, Haas weathered the storm and by 2010 he tasted his first Tour victory at the Bob Hope Classic. As the young champion’s game continued to improve he lifted the trophy again in 2010 at the Viking Classic. In 2011 Haas won the Tour Championship, a FedEx Cup playoff event.
On Sunday Bill Haas was victorious once again, winning the Northern Trust Open in a tight playoff against Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley. In good form and with his golfing skills well settled, Haas is likely to continue his success as he competes on the PGA Tour this season - following in a proud family tradition of professional golf.
