Player Profile: Jeev Milkha Singh

On Sunday India's Jeev Milkha Singh won his fourth international title when he was victorious at the Scottish Open. This week's player profile highlights this talented player's recent career milestones as he continues his success on the European Tour.

Born in 1971 in Chandigarh, India, Singh was exposed to the world of competitive sport from a young age. His father, Milkha Singh, was an Indian Olympic athlete while his mother, Nirmal Kaur, was the captain of India's Women's Volleyball team. After recognising their son's interest in golf, Singh's family encouraged the talented young player to develop his skills on the course.

After completing his high school education Singh enrolled at the Abilene Christian University in Texas, where he completed his degree in International Studies. During this time, the young player honed his skills on the golf course, winning the NCAA Division II individual championship in 1993 amongst other amateur titles in the United States.

Singh's professional debut came in 1993 when he won the Southern Oklahoma State Open, his first victory on the professional circuit. Following this initial win, Singh played a number of tournaments in Asia, weathering the challenges of professional golf successfully during the first few years of his career. When he successfully completed the European Tour's qualifying school in 1997, the second Indian player in history to do so, Singh began his successful career in Europe.

Since 1997, Singh has won four times on the European Tour. His first victory came in 2006 when he won the Volvo China Open, beating the Spaniard Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano by a single stroke. Later in the same season, Singh won the Volvo Masters in a one stroke victory over Sergio Garcia Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald. In 2008 Singh was victorious again at the Bank Austria Golf Open, beating Simon Wakefield.

On Sunday Singh returned to winning ways when he beat Francesco Molinari to win the prestigious Scottish Open. Golf fans can expect many more exciting victories from this talented player.
