On Sunday Australia's Marc Leishman won his first PGA title when he won the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut. This week's player profile introduces golf fans to this talented player who has his sights set on professional golfing success in North America.
Leishman was born in 1983 in Warrnambool, in Victoria, Australia. After taking to golf at a young age, the Australian enjoyed a very successful amateur career in his country of birth. Before turning professional in 2005 at the age of 21, Leishman won several amateur titles including the 2001 Victorian Junior Masters, the Victorian Boys Championship and the South Australian Junior Masters.
After turning professional Leishman competed successfully on the Von Nida and Korean Tours, quickly adapting to life on the professional circuit as he weathered the many technical and personal challenges that are involved in a career in professional golf. After carding several top-10 finishes on both tours, he was victorious for the first time during the 2006 season when he won the Cairns Classic, the Toyota Southern Classic, and the Jisan Resort Open. In 2007 the Australian successfully defended his Toyota Southern Classic title and the following year he won the 2008 Victorian PGA Championship.
The 2008 season saw Leishman's North American debut as he competed on the second-tier Nationwide Tour. His first victory came in his rookie year when he won the 2008 WNB Golf Classic, and the following season he made his debut on the PGA Tour, where he was named Rookie of the Year in the 2009 season.
Known for his strong finishes on the Tour, Leishman won his first PGA Tour event on Sunday when he was victorious at the Travelers Championship. As this talented young player continues to flourish, golf fans can look forward to many more impressive victories from Marc Leishman.
