On Sunday Germany's Marcel Siem broke an eight year drought to win the French Open in Versailles. This week's player profile introduces golf fans to this talented player from northern Europe as he establishes himself as a winner at the top level of international golf.
Siem was born in 1980 in the city of Mettmann, Germany. Growing up in Germany where golf did not traditionally have a huge following, Siem followed the example of compatriot Bernhard Lange and took a serious approach to his golf training from a young age. After enjoying a successful amateur career which included a win at the 1999 Spanish Amateur Championship, Siem turned professional in the year 2000 at the age of twenty.
After weathering the challenges of competing at the top level of European golf, Siem made his breakthrough victory in 2004 at the co-sanctioned Dunhill Championship in South Africa. Relatively unknown before this victory, the young German shot up the European rankings following this initial victory and has since become a regular contender on the European Tour.
Following his early victory, Siem spent several years consolidating his game as he competed in several prestigious events including the 2006 WGC World Cup where he was part of the winning German team along with Berhard Lange. In 2010 he made his major debut at the Open Championship where he finished tied 24th overall. This season, the German made his debut at the US Open where he finished in 60th place. Despite these accolades, Siem had not won on the European Tour for eight years until Sunday when his victory in France brought him back into the golfing limelight.
As Marcel Siem continues to build his career, golf fans should keep an eye on this talented player as he establishes himself as a serious contender on the European Tour.
