This week’s player profile showcases the American golfer Mark Wilson. Born in the town of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin in America’s Midwest in 1974, Wilson had his first exposure to the game of golf as a teenager. After graduating high school, he attended the University of North Carolina and turned professional in 1996. His first few years on the NGA Hooters Tour and the PGA Tour saw Wilson rack up impressive top ten finishes and establish himself as a consistent and focused golfer.
In the late 2000s, Wilson saw his game taken to a whole new level. After a decade of consistent play without a significant win on the PGA Tour, Wilson was victorious in 2007 at the Honda Classic, beating a foursome of players – Jose Coceres of Argentina, Camilo Villegas of Colombia and fellow American Boo Weekley in a playoff to clinch the title. Victory was his again in 2009 at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, held at Riviera Maya in Cancun. His impressive two stroke victory over American JJ Henry was the best of his career thus far and put him on the map after his win the previous year.
At the weekend, Wilson triumphed once again when he beat compatriot Steve Marino and Tim Clark of South Africa to win the Sony Open in Hawaii by two strokes, matching his lead at the Mayakoba Classic in 2009. Weathering a pressured final round with ease, Wilson delighted golf fans with his resilience on the course and thundered to victory for the third time on the PGA Tour. Mark Wilson has seen his game rise to new levels in the past few years. From the start he has been a consistent player, Wilson is now in contention to rack up tournament wins and in years to come may have his eye on a major or two. Golf fans will continue to root for the personable Midwesterner as he continues his charge to glory.
