Player Profile - Retief Goosen
This week’s player profile highlights the recent developments in the career and life of South African golf star Retief Goosen.
Born in the town of Pietersburg (now known as Polokwane) in the Limpopo province of South Africa’s northern region, Goosen was an avid golfer from a young age. Though accounts differ on the exact time of Goosen’s professional focus on golf, a common legend has it that an adolescnet Goosen took an avid interest in the game after being struck by lightning while out on the golf course. Urban legend or not, this tale offers an early glimpse at the career of this seasoned professional.
Goosen’s wins on the US and European tours have been many and varied. A two time US Open winner in 2001 and 2004, the South African is a favourite among golf fans in the United States, who have given him the nickname “The Goose”. In Europe he is best known for winning the BMW International Open. In total, Goosen has won 44 events around the world and is regularly in the top ten of world golf.
Known for his athletic posture and effortless swing, with an emphasis on rhythm not unlike compatriot Ernie Els, Goosen has been regularly described as having a swing to emulate. At over six foot tall and with a strong physical build, Goosen delivers power on his drives and has a finessed short game that make him a formidable rival on the course.
When not busy on the golf course, Goosen has a number of business interests including his successful winery, The Goose Wines. With master winemaker Morne Jonker in charge of the vineyards and cellar, Goosen’s wines have met with critical acclaim and are always in demand at wine auctions and as prizes at golf tournaments and corporate golf days.
