Player Profile - Rickie Fowler

On Sunday the American Rickie Fowler won his first-ever championship on the US PGA Tour. As this talented young player becomes a force to be reckoned with on the tour, this week's player profile introduces golf fans to one of America's finest young players.

Born in 1988 in Murrieta, California, Rickie Fowler took to golf at a young age with his interest in the game peaking during his high school years. Practically self-taught, Fowler spent hours on the driving range each day discovering his natural swing and perfecting his technique during his years at high school. When he was just a high school freshman, Fowler set the all-time record at his home course, SCGA in Murrieta.

After a successful high school golf career, Fowler played collegiate golf during his studies at Oklahoma State University. His first victory came in 2007 at the Fighting Illini Invitational where he won by one stroke.

In the same year, Fowler was a member of the victorious US Team at the Walker Cup, with an overall record of 3-1. He also won the Sunnehanna Amateur and the Players Amateur in the 2007 season.

2008 saw Fowler successfully defend his Sunnehanna victory. He also took part in the US Open and was one of the few amateurs who made the cut.

In 2009 Fowler made the decision to turn professional. The laid-back Californian, not one to make heavy weather of a stressful situation, adjusted to the pressures of playing on the Nationwide Tour with relative ease and carded several top ten finishes during his first 3 years.

In 2010 Fowler made his PGA Tour debut. After finishing second at the Phoenix Open, the young champion was selected for the US Ryder Cup team – the youngest player ever to be selected. Finishing the season as Rookie of the Year, Fowler was on the verge of victory.

On Sunday, Fowler won his first PGA tournament when he won the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. Golf fans can look forward to many more exciting finishes from this talented young player as he builds his career at the highest level of professional golf.
