Player Profile - Simon Dyson
This week’s player profile highlights the career achievements of Simon Dyson, five-time champion and winner of the 2011 Irish Open.
Born in 1977 in the city of York, England, Dyson grew up in a region of Britain known for its scenic golf courses and challenging weather conditions. These early influences may explain the ease with which the young Dyson took to the game, and by age 22 he was runner-up in the English Amateur. Having won the Finnish Amateur in 1999, the same year that saw him play in the Walker Cup, Dyson took the decision to turn professional the following season.
Making the unusual decision to debut on the Asian Tour instead of playing in Europe , Dyson was soon rewarded for his adventurousness when he topped the Order of Merit after winning three tournaments in the 2000 season. After receiving the Rookie of the Year Award, the young Englishman was welcomed on the European Tour where he has played ever since.
In 2006, five years after joining the European Tour, Dyson won his first championship – the Indonesian Open. In a two stroke victory over Australia’s Andrew Buckle, Dyson proved himself a serious contender on the tour and has enjoyed a successful career ever since. Later in the 2006 season he was victorious at the KLM Open.
The 2009 season saw Dyson make his mark once again as he repeated his victory of three years prior to win the KLM Open again. Later in the same season Dyson was victorious at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, beating compatriots Rory McIlroy and Oliver Wilson by three strokes to clinch the title. On Sunday, Dyson won once again at the Irish Open. In a tense final round that almost saw a playoff between the Englishman and Australia’s Richard Green, Dyson won the tournament by a single stroke to claim his fifth career victory.
