On Sunday the Ryder Cup was won by Team Europe in an amazing final round comeback which stunned golf fans and commentators alike. This week's player profile celebrates some of the fine players who made this victory possible.
Under the leadership of team captain Jose Maria Olazabal, the European Team faced an incredible challenge during the final round as they set their sights on the trophy despite an eight-point lead established by the dynamic American Team which was led by Davis Love III. However, the Europeans weathered the storm and emerged victorious thanks to their fantastic form and a number of exceptional performances throughout the final round.
Credit for the turnaround in Europe's fortune must be given to the captain and all members of the team. However, certain key players tipped the balance and ensured a victory for the European Team.
After a red-hot front nine which saw the Europeans win on six out of eight holes, Germany's Martin Kaymer beat Steve Stricker to bring Europe into the lead. This talented young player and former world number one has 18 titles to his name, including a major win at the 2010 PGA Championship. His sterling performance in this year's Ryder Cup is sure to make Kaymer even more popular with golf fans on the Continent.
Another talented young European – Francesco Molinari of Italy – is the player responsible for Europe's victory on Sunday. The Italian beat Tiger Woods on the eighteenth hole to secure a win for the European Team. Molinari has enjoyed 5 professional wins as he continues to build his career on the European Tour, and Sunday's Matchplay victory over golfing legend Woods is sure to boost the young Italian's confidence as he continues his excellent form.
As the European Team celebrates their victory, golf fans and commentators are reflecting on the surprise victory which allowed them to clinch the trophy. With determination and excellent teamwork, Team Europe retains the Ryder Cup title for another two years.
