This week’s player profile highlights the recent career achievements of 2011 Wyndham Championship winner Webb Simpson. Simpson, who is 26 years old, was born in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina. Having taken to golf from a young age, Simpson played extensively while at college. Attending Wake Forest University, he was afforded ample opportunities on the college golf circuit that allowed him to hone his skills while becoming acquainted with the rigours of professional golf tournaments.
Simpson’s college golf career was successful from the start. In 2007 he was a member of two successful tournament teams at the Walker and Palmer Cups. A three-time All American, the talented young player won the prestigious ACC Player of the Year Award in 2008. By this time, Simpson had taken the decision to turn professional.
Despite playing professionally from June of 2008 and not the beginning of the season, Simpson’s game was such that he swiftly made up for lost time. By the end of 2008 he had scored two second place finishes on the Nationwide Tour and the allure of the PGA Tour waited.
After weathering the pressure at the PGA Tour’s qualifying school, Simpson emerged tied for seventh place and won his tour exemption for the 2009 season. His debut season saw Simpson faring well against a field of professional players as he came fifth in the Bob Hope Classic and ninth at the Sony Open. By the end of 2009 he had carded four top ten finishes to rank 70th on the world money list. For Webb Simpson, success at the highest level of professional golf was becoming a reality.
After a 2010 season that saw the young player consolidate his game, Simpson emerged this season as a serious contender. A near-miss at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans set the scene for Sunday’s final round at the Wyndham Championship when Simpson won his first-ever PGA title.
