On Sunday Webb Simpson won his first-ever major tournament when he beat a host of players to clinch the US Open title. This week's player profile highlights the recent career milestones of this talented young player who is joining the ranks of the world's best golfers.
Born in 1985 in Raleigh, North Carolina, Webb Simpson took to the game of golf from a young age. Growing up in a state where golf is a popular pastime, Simpson benefited from the variety of courses that grace the landscape of his home city. After a successful high school golf career, Simpson continued to hone his skills on the golf course during his studies at Wake Forest University. His collegiate golf accolades include being a three time All-American and ACC Player of the Year in 2008.
After turning professional in 2008, Simpson played on the Nationwide Tour and US PGA Tour. After two second place finishes on the Nationwide Tour, the young player obtained his tour card for the 2009 PGA Tour season after successfully completing qualifying school.
The 2009 and 2010 seasons saw Simpson weathering the challenges of top-tier professional golf very successfully. Retaining his tour card in each successive year, the young player worked his way up the money list with a 70th place ranking at the end of 2010.
Simpson's 2011 season was a watershed year for the young player. Having racked up several top ten finishes in the previous two seasons, Simpson won his first US PGA title at the 2011 Wyndham Championship. The following month he won the Deutsche Bank Championship and finished the season ranked number two on the PGA Tour's money list.
On Sunday, Simpson won his first major at the US Open. Golf fans can expect many more impressive performances from the young champion as he joins the race for world number one.
