Player Profile - Yani Tseng
Yani Tseng, the 22 year-old golfing sensation from Taiwan, made history on Sunday when she became the youngest golfer of either gender to win four major titles. This week we explore her rise to the top of women’s golf.
Born in Gueishan Township, Taiwan in 1989, Tseng showed an aptitude for golf from a young age. Growing up in Taiwan which is famous for its love of golf, Tseng had ample opportunity to develop her skills, a task that she went about with extreme hard work and dedication. By the time she was 15, she was the top ranked amateur in Taiwan and in 2004 she won the US Women’s Amateur Public Links – a title she retained the following year along with a string of wins in the United States. Yani Tseng was on the path to great success in world golf and she had barely turned 16.
In 2007, at the age of 18, Tseng made her professional debut. On the Ladies’ Asian Golf Tour, she was victorious at the DLF Women’s India Open. In Canada she won her first championship on the CN Canadian Tour. Tseng’s big moment came in 2008 when she made her debut on the LPGA Tour, winning the LPGA Championship, a major title, in her rookie year. This was the first of many records that the young golfer would set on the tour.
2009 was a good year for Tseng as she weathered the challenges of playing full-time on a professional tour. She was victorious again at the LPGA Corning Classic, her second win on the tour in as many years. 2010 saw Tseng picking up pace, with her game improving at every turn. She won three times in the 2010 season, with two major victories at the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the Women’s British Open.
This season, Yani Tseng has won three tournaments to date, including the LPGA Championship on Sunday. Having made history yet again, the talented young player is sure to thrill golf fans for years to come.
