On Sunday Zach Johnson won his first title in two years on the PGA Tour when he was victorious at the Colonial Invitational. This week's player profile highlight's Johnson's recent career milestones as he finds himself back in winning ways.
Johnson was born in 1976 in Iowa City, Iowa. The son of a local doctor, Johnson was a naturally athletic child and by the time he was in high school he had successfully competed in a number of sports including basketball, baseball, American football and soccer. Johnson first picked up a club at the age of 10, and after honing his golfing skills during his teenage years it became clear that a professional career would be possible for the talented young golfer.
After a successful collegiate golf career while enrolled at Drake University, Johnson took the decision to turn professional in 1998. His professional career began on several second-tier developmental tours including the Buy.com or Nationwide Tour, the Hooters Tour and the Prairie Tour which no longer exists. In 2001 Johnson won three events on the Hooters Tour, and after a successful 2003 season on the Nationwide Tour the young American had set a record for tour earnings during one season, earning almost $500,000.
Johnson made his PGA Tour debut in 2004, and won his first tournament in the same season at the BellSouth Classic. Having weathered the transition to top-tier golf with apparent ease, Johnson wowed fans in 2007 when he won the US Masters, his first major victory.
More recently, Johnson has recorded consistent top-20 and top-10 finishes on the Tour, positioning himself for victory. In 2010 he won the Colonial Invitational in Fort Worth Texas, and on Sunday he re-claimed the same title after a two year wait. Golf fans should expect to see more of this talented player as he continues to develop his game at the highest level.
