Quail Hollow Club

On Sunday the American rookie Derek Ernst won his first PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship, hosted by the exclusive Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. This week’s course review takes a look at this iconic course, which is considered by many to be one of the finest in the American Southeast.

Just a stone throw away from the bustle of Charlotte, the financial hub of the Southeast United States, Quail Hollow Club offers an escape to its lush greenery and exclusive tranquillity to its members. Designed by George W Cobb and operating since 1961, the course has become a regular feature on the PGA Tour since the Wells Fargo Championship (formerly the Wachovia Championship) made the course its home in 2003.

Stretching over 7,442 yards, in the temperate climate of North Carolina, the 18-hole course is both challenging and scenic. Catering to dedicated weekend golfers, the course design is challenging enough to attract several top professionals to the Wells Fargo Tournament. Quail Hollow Club enjoys enduring popularity with such greats as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Among the course’s signature holes is the fourteenth hole (a par 4), which is flanked by a lake on its left side. Reaching the green with a good drive is more than possible, but errant shots are likely to land up in the drink.

Another hole with a striking water feature, the par-three seventeenth is played over water toward a green that stands out like an island in the lake. Once a successful tee shot has cleared the water and dodged the large greenside bunker, players will need to putt accurately to negotiate the undulating green.

Quail Hollow Club is a private club, operating on a members-only basis. However, a few lucky golf enthusiasts may have an opportunity to play as guests of current members. For more information on this iconic course. Golfers can visit the Quail Hollow Club website.
