Every January the Golf Writers Association of America awards the most consistent male, female, and senior player of the previous season with an award, recognising the three players who stood out in the world of professional golf over the past year.
This belated Christmas gift for the player who most impressed the Association in 2013 was hotly contested this year, with the Australian Adam Scott and world number one Tiger Woods at the top of the association's list for Male Player of the Year. Inbee Park and Stacey Lewis faced off for the Female Player of the Year Prize, while Kenny Perry and Bernhard Lange competed for the Senior Award.
Victory for Scott
Adam Scott, the 2013 US Masters champion, narrowly beat Woods to claim the Male Player of the Year title, winning by five ballots in a vote of 218 Golf Writers’ Association members.
The Australian's impressive playoff victory at Augusta, as well as his four international victories in 2013, contributed to his winning the prestigious award. Woods won five events on the PGA Tour last season, but his failure to clinch a major title put him just behind Scott in the tally of votes.
Park wins Female Player Award by a Landslide
Despite a great performance by Women's British Open champion Stacey Lewis in the 2013 season, Inbee Park dominated the votes in the Female Player of the Year race - she won with over 90% of the ballot. Park enjoyed a bumper season, winning six events on the LPGA Tour - including three majors.
Perry takes Seniors Award
Veteran golfer Kenny Perry clinched the award for best senior golfer, facing off against time-weathered opponents on the Champions Tour to win three majors, including the 2013 Charles Schwab Cup. Perry edged out German golfing legend Bernhard Lange to win the lion's share of votes.
