TPC Boston - Norton, Massachusetts

On Monday Sweden’s Henrik Stenson won the Deutsche Bank Championship, hosted by TPC Boston. This week we review this prestigious course, taking a look at the design of the Boston area’s best-know golfing establishment.

Located south of Boston near the town of Norton, Massachusetts, TPC Boston opened its doors in 2007. The course was designed by noted golf course architect Gil Hanse in association with Brad Faxon. The layout was intended to give golfers a taste of vintage New England golf with a modern twist, preserving the old-world atmosphere of golf on America’s east coast.

The first thing many golfers notice when they play the course at TPC Boston for the first time is how established and time-weathered it feels for a facility that is barely seven years old. The illusion of age is successfully created by the course design, which features ample amounts of exposed rock and rough that gives the impression of having been there for decades – these design features make the course unique and well worth experiencing.

The course opens with a 365-yard par 4 which plays toward an elevated green. Golfers should resist the urge to pull out a driver on the first hole, which requires great accuracy to avoid landing in the sizeable fairway bunker.

The seventh hole, a sizeable 600-yard par 5, features a blind approach shot which will test the accuracy of any golfer’s short game. A clean fairway shot and a fair amount of luck should land the ball in a good lie, as long as the two bunkers on the left side are avoided.

The 161-yard, par 3 sixteenth hole is one of the most scenic on the course but in true TPC Boston style, accuracy is crucial. The tee shot is played over water, making it easy for the ball to take a dive. Accurate drivers should find it easy to make par on this hole.

TPC Boston is a private golf club, but visitors are permitted by special arrangement or as part of a TPC travel package. Golfers can visit the club’s website for more information.
