On the US PGA Tour, Rory McIlroy took over the title of world number one from Luke Donald with a win at the Honda Classic on Sunday.
The young Northern Irishman held off a field of determined rivals including Tiger Woods to card a final round score of 69 and secure his victory. McIlroy had to contend with an impressive charge by Woods, who finished the final round ten under in one of the best fourth-day performances of his career. Nonetheless, McIlroy was able to weather this storm of competitive pressure and held on to the lead and allowing Woods to finish second, tied with Tom Gillis.
With the attention turning towards this year’s Masters Tournament at Augusta, Sunday’s results may have given golf fans a sneak preview of what McIlroy and Woods have to offer. With the younger man at the top of the world golf rankings and the seasoned former world number one seemingly back in excellent form, the green jacket may be hotly contested in 2012.
On the Ladies European Tour, the inaugural World Ladies Championship was won by China’s Shanshan Feng.
Held on the island of Hainan in southern China, the tournament was the first of its kind and promises to put China on the ladies golf map with a challenging course at Mission Hills Haikou. With a strong local crowd following, Feng enjoyed tremendous support from Chinese fans as she lifted the trophy with a one stroke victory in the individual stroke play tournament.
Feng now enjoys the historic title of being the first female golfer from mainland China to win an event on the Ladies European Tour. With a final round score of 10 under, Feng proved to her fans and competitors alike that her winning streak on the ladies golf circuit is just getting started.
