World Golf News - 12 December 2011

The European Tour's 2011 season came to a close on Sunday, when Spain's Alvaro Quiros won the Dubai World Championship.

Starting the final round with a two-stroke lead, Quiros made good on his intention to win the Championship as he carded an impressive score of 67. Two birdies on the front nine set the Spaniard up for victory, with second place going to Paul Lawrie of Britain. World number one Luke Donald finished in third place, a result that saw him clinch the European Order of Merit.

For Donald, who is the top-ranked golfer on the planet thanks to a spectacular 2011 season, the Order of Merit title holds extra significance. After topping the US PGA Tour's money list for 2011, his prime position on the European Tour has confirmed him as one of the truly great golfers of our time.

In Women's golf, a triumphant Caroline Hedwall surged to victory at the Hero Women's Indian Open. Mild weather conditions allowed a high level of focus on the course in New Delhi as Hedwall, still in her rookie year, fended off challenges from Thailand's PornanongPhaltum and Becky Morgan of Wales who came second and third respectively.

Hedwall has enjoyed a successful debut season, with her first win coming in May at the Ladies Slovak Open. Wins at the Finnair Masters and UNIQA Ladies Golf Open have served as a confidence boost to the 22-year old as she rises to the challenge of professional golf.

The Women's Indian Open marks Hedwall's fourth title since joining the LPGA this season. With a final round score of 69, the young Swede showed golf fans why she has climbed the professional ranks as she pursues a career at the top level of international golf. Her new fans will be looking forward to Hedwall's 2012 season with great anticipation.
