World Golf News - 21 July 2011

Northern Irishman Darren Clarke won his first major on Sunday when he was victorious at the British Open. In a final round that took place in ever-changing weather conditions, the 42-year old stuck to his guns and lifted the claret jug in his first major victory. Second place went to Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, three strokes behind the winner, while Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn came in third.

Paying tribute to his late wife Heather, Clarke reflected on his long journey to a major win. Critics had claimed that Clarke was beyond winning age, and with a ranking that had fallen below 100 in the world many had discounted the popular player and hedged their bets on the younger European rising stars for the British Open.

As the tournament progressed however, it became clear that the tough course and weather conditions would favour experience over youth as seasoned players dominated the field. In the final round it was Mickelson who offered the greatest challenge to Clarke, but the Northern Irishman’s resolve and patience won him the day.

Of the young European players who have made their mark on the game recently, only Martin Kaymer of Germany was prominent on the leader board, taking fifth place. On the US PGA Tour, rookie Chris Kirk was victorious at the Viking Classic. In the heat of Madison, Mississippi, the 26-year old won his first-ever tour victory by a single stroke over a host of players who tied for second place. Play was highly competitive throughout the final round, with several players sharing the lead at different points. Despite this pressure, Kirk kept his nerve and forged ahead, with birdies on the 15th and 17th holes ensuring his victory.

The LPGA and Senior’s tours were in recess this week, and will commence next week.
