World Golf Results

The world's finest players gathered in Augusta, Georgia last week for the prestigious US Masters tournament which was won by the American Bubba Watson in a playoff against South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen.

Having started Sunday's final round as playing partners, both Watson and Oosthuizen showed signs of taking the lead. Oosthuizen set the bar high early in the day with an Albatross at the par-5 second hole which afforded him a two-shot lead, but as the round unfolded the South African's fortunes suddenly reversed.

As he weathered the course at Augusta with apparent ease, Watson played consistently and made the most of his shots, both good and bad. By the end of the round both players were tied for first place, forcing a playoff for the coveted green jacket.

As the two players teed off at the second extra hole, the par 4 tenth, Oosthuizen showed signs of clinching the tournament when his approach shot landed just a few feet short of the green. However, luck was not on the South African's side as he chipped 15 feet past the hole and narrowly missed his par putt on the return.

For his part, Watson found himself in a tight spot as his approach shot landed in the rough. Not to be fazed by this obstacle, the American mustered his skills and executed an almost perfect high draw, landing his ball 10 feet from the pin. With two putts to win, Watson clinched his first major victory and was visibly moved when he spoke to journalists about his greatest golfing success to date.

Third place went to a group of players including Britain's Lee Westwood and the American Phil Mickelson. Former world number one Tiger Woods finished the Masters with his worst-ever score, while Ireland's Rory McIlroy failed to secure himself a position at the top of the leader board.
