On the US PGA Tour, the American Zach Johnson was victorious at the John Deere Classic after he beat Troy Matteson in a sudden-death playoff to claim the title.

After leading the tournament from day one, Matteson saw his game slip somewhat on Sunday with an energised Johnson hot on his heels. After erasing a four-stroke deficit in the final round, Johnson forced a playoff when he matched Matteson's final round score at the eighteenth hole.

As the two players faced off at the extra hole, an equal amount of bad luck seemed to be plaguing both Johnson and Matteson. With tee shots which found a bunker and the woods respectively. After saving his ball from the rough, Matteson was faced with another challenge as his approach shot landed in the water. Johnson's ball would suffer a similar fate, with both players carding double bogeys on the eighteenth.

When both players returned to the tee for a second attempt at victory, Johnson's luck appeared to be unchanged as his tee shot found the same bunker his ball had landed in just minutes before. However, a fantastic chip out of the bunker landed his ball on the green within easy putting distance of the hole. A birdie putt sealed victory for Johnson, bringing his total career victories to nine.

In Europe, the Scottish Open was won by India's Jeev Milkha Singh when he beat Italy's Francesco Molinari in a playoff for the title.

As local favourite Marc Warren failed to weather the competition during Sunday's final round, Molinari and Singh emerged as potential winners as they tied at 17-under for the tournament to force a playoff.

Singh, who is the son of an Olympic athlete, now has four professional titles to his name. His win at the prestigious Scottish Open should secure this talented golfer's place at the highest level of professional golf.
